The Gray & Davison organ of Sherborne Abbey is housed in a distinctive double case by the Victorian architect R.C. Carpenter. Its deeply recessed position in the north transept has occasioned a succession of rebuilding, all attempting to solve the difficulty of providing adequate congregational accompaniment in the main body and rear of the nave. We hope that our work in 2004-5 will have brought this cycle to an end, with the provision of a new nave division of the organ which hangs on the wall in a new case below the great west window. At the same time the main instrument has been substantially reconstructed with new soundboards, tracker action and a new console and coupling chassis. Some minor stop changes have been made: the Swell has gained a Double Trumpet and Flute 4, while returning the Oboe to 8ft pitch. The Great remains as before, while the Choir has been returned to the spirit of its G&D roots.
The consultant to the Abbey for the project was Ian Bell.
