view main image of Worcester Quire organ
The new Quire organ was completed in July 2008 and first used at the Worcester Three Choirs Festival in August, including an inaugural recital by Dame Gillian Weir. It was dedicated at Evensong on October 4th, which was followed by a further opening recital given by Thomas Trotter.
The Great organ is housed in a new case at triforium level on the north side of the Quire, with the Choir and Solo divisions behind. The Pedal organ is similarly housed in a matching case on the south side, with the Swell box behind. The console is placed in a new loft in the south Quire aisle.
The existing large Hill case in the transept will continue to house the 32ft flues, which will be available to both the Quire organ and the Nave organ when built. The intention is to transfer this case from the present south transept to the north transept, where it will also contain a two manual and pedal organ for use when the cathedral choir sings at the head of the Nave, and which will be playable from either console.
